This weekend was the first annual Worn Out Fashion Show presented by The Stranger (a popular local Seattle paper).
The show was sold out...and boasted looks from all kinds of designers ranging in tailored Menswear, clear raincoats worn by naked ladies (Woot!), and giant fluffy tulle coats worn by dance group Dance Belt.

Part of the competition was a challenge offered by Vitamin Water Zero. It was an inspiration and color challenge. I was given SQUEEZED Lemonade, the colors being light grey and citron gold. Well, of course I immediately thought; SEQUINS!

Not only was the dress full sequin, in the color scheme of the bottle design. But my hair was decorated with pieces of the actual bottle, cut into rings and sewn to the wig, then the bottle label was cut into diamond shapes and glued to the accessory.

And Finally. Myself and a helper spent 2 days adhering over 2000 crystals in the citron and grey color, to a pair of platforms:

Alas, it was a fun challenge, but I did not win the $1000 prize.

The Stranger Likes Me...they Really Like me.

...and a slew of other designers. hehe. Well, I'll take acknowledgement where I can get it.

The Stranger is our local Seattle "too hip for this shit" weekly paper. Condescendingly hilarious, they often beat the crap out of mainstream fads, reserving their praise for the underdog. I'm thankful to be a part of their first Annual Fashion Show (Worn Out), but also to have a mention alongside other fabulous hard working designers in this weeks paper.
It's as nice as being featured on Cocoperez, or receiving a lovely email from Katy Perry's tour costume designer, and nice comments from Bob Mackie, and having Betsey Johnson tell me I'm 'Amazing'. *wink*

What it looks like: An assortment, ranging from bridal to cocktail to theater, with a focus on burlesque costumes in Von Stratton's aesthetic: high-glam fantasy sci-fi, with vintage throwbacks and a nod to Judy Jetson. This includes, for instance, a backless, body-clinging, reveal-ready gown that represents Venus, all aswirl with purple organza and satin and sculptural gold-tone bust cups suggesting a midcentury sexy-alien look. (For upcoming projects, Von Stratton has collected metallic place mats, mirrored paper, and solar-cell panels because she loves their futuristic sheen.)

Worth noting: The rules of garmentry become twisted in the realm of the stage world: Interior linings, ordinarily kept private, are exposed during the disrobe—so they must be especially dazzling. And the costumes appear delicate, but they can't be: They get thrashed when they're so joyfully whipped off and flung around.

The Oscars occurred this past Sunday night. Up for many awards was the amazing film Black Swan. It got me reminiscing, ten years ago to the date, another Swan walked the red carpet, and left everyone speechless.
To honor the genius that is Bjork, I made my own version of the Marjan Pejoski dress. (A shorter and more cleave barring version, of course.)

This is the Annual Oscar's Party hosted by Philip Heier and 3 Dollar Bill Cinema. This year it was held at the largest screen theater in Seattle, the Cinerama. What fun it was!

BURLESQUE: The Movie. My review

Last night I went to a pre-screening of BURLESQUE, which opens next week.
I'll admit, I was skeptical about the film, as I'd seen the previews and thought, here is Coyote Ugly meets Showgirls, with Cher.
But I was wrong. It's more like Flashdance meets Cabaret, with Cher.

The Burlesque:
I was thoroughly entertained. I knew this film was going to focus on the Burlesque stylings more that of the PussyCat Dolls, than that of Dita Von Teese. Lots of hair tossing and jazz-90's style dancing. But I was pleasantly surprised at the respect for the vintage that was in the film. An adorable fan dance (by Xtina), retro styled Bump and Grind, and the use of some vintage music (I heard our Voodoo act in there!). I was right in making my bet that I wouldn't see one set of pasties, but I now believe that was to attain the PG-13 rating.
With three of the movie's songs using the film's title, I imagine a slew of burlesque gals designing routines to them. I have dibs on Cher's song though!

The Acting:
The plot is predictable. You probably already know it from the previews. But no one is going to this movie for the plot line. And, remarkably, it was pretty entertaining. The story of a 'small town girl trying to make it in the big city' is one we've seen time and time again...but I like it.
All the actors did a great job of working with the script. It was charming and sincere, and you really feel for the characters, despite the story line's lack of depth.
There are some genius one liners delivered brilliantly by Cher, Christina, and Kristin Bell. Stanley Tucci was smart in making his 'gay side-kick' character understated, so much so, that I didn't realize that he wasn't Cher's husband in the film, until half way through. I'm thankful for that, as it could have been played over the top and flamboyant. One bad note: More Alan Cumming! He is perfection, I wish he'd been in more scenes.

Cher:
Cher is funny. She's brassy, ballsy, and looks amazing for 64. The one liners that were written for her and Christina were delivered brilliantly by both actresses.
Cher has a few Torch Song moments, and as I was watching her, I was picturing all the Drag Queens who will be emulating the songs in years to come.

Christina:
Ok, I thought she was going to be the worse thing about this movie. I'm tired of her persona in the press, I'm tired of her vocal gymnastics. But DAMN! Girl can dance, girl can act, and wow she can sing (but we knew that). She steals the show, and you really remember that this girl is gorgeous in a close-up with no make-up. (It's easy to forget that because sometimes she looks SO done up on the red carpet). Her character is sweet and charming, and you really like her.
For a Disney kid turned pop star, A+ in the acting department. Way better than the Mariah Carey 'Glitter' and Britney 'Crossroads" fiascos.

All in All, I'm glad I saw this movie. In fact, I'll probably buy it when it comes out on DVD. It's a great movie to see over the Holiday Weekend, if you like razzle dazzle. However, it does make you want to get to the gym and workout 7 days a week (Those girls' bodies are fierce.)
So it might not be the best thing right before the Thanksgiving gluttony.

You're making high fashion fun and wearable and within reach of the every-girl. Sure, we'd all like to own a $5000 Louis Vuitton handbag, but that is only reality for a small community of people. Althought that is wonderful; making a collection that is chic, interesting, fashion-forward, and accessible is more valuable to women everywhere.

What a day. The Atomic Bombshells danced in the window of the downtown Betsey Johnson store, and throughout her appearance at the location. Immediately upon arrival, she hopped up in the window and danced to Gaga's Telephone with us.
She hugged me, and said, "You made this! You're amazing!"

She was so gracious and wonderful, telling us how happy she was we could be there.

A Mother/Daughter Photoshoot Like You've Never Seen Before

My mom called me about a month ago, and said, "Jamie, I want us to do a Photoshoot. Like, a Mother /Daughter Photoshoot, but not cheesy. I'm looking pretty good for my age, so I'll wear whatever as long as I get really big hair."

One was married in a hand made Von Stratton couture dress...and the other won the crown at the 2010-2011 Le Femme Magnifique International Pageant.

Let me begin with the bride:

Jenny and I met because she'd hit up Google for a dress designer in Seattle. She wanted something poofy and girlie, but structural (she studied industrial design) and futuristic looking. She came to my studio loaded with images of McQueen, Jill Sander, and other examples or things she liked.

I will admit, it was a challenge making something really poofy and big, but modern and structured. Inevitably, I whipped up a dress she was more than happy with. AND to top it all off, turns out I knew her fiance in High School. So she invited me to the wedding, and I can't even begin to tell you how much fun it was. I missed my ten year reunion, and this made up for that! Many of the attendees I knew from High School, and everyone was such a blast to chat with.

It was a lovely ceremony, and I can say that I'm a lucky gal to have such wonderful working relationships with clients that end up becoming friends.

I put together a humorous little act for the Pink Door's weekly Cabaret show. This was my fun tribute to Eyjafjallajokull, Bjork, Vikings, and a few other silly things in there.
I wish the video quality was better, but I'm grateful to the crowd member who captured it on her cameraphone.

What every DIVA Should Have.

Are you a Showgirl? A Burlesque Performer? A Drag Queen? Or a fabulous DIVA? For all my girls and boys who love expressing themselves through the art of make-up and pageantry, I'm going to share a few tips with you. Here's a list of things you should have/know:

1. Knowledge is Power. Make-up is fun, but many companies use LOADS of synthetics and chemicals which can be harmful to your body. Even the most expensive brands can be bad for you, so price doesn't necessarily mean anything. Utilizing this great website, will help you be able to find healthy products for everyday use:

For instance, Loreal's Bare Natural Mineral foundations are rated at only a 3. This is an affordable healthier option for everyday coverage.

2. Olive Oil.
A good general rule I try to follow is, "If I wouldn't eat it, I shouldn't put it on my skin."
Now obviously, that doesn't always apply (I would not eat eyelash glue, but I still use it.)
Olive Oil is my favorite beauty product. It's GREAT as an eye make-up remover. Really. And, if it gets in your eyes, it wont matter (other than a smidge of blurry vision). It works great. If you look at the first few components of any eye make-up remover, you'll see "mineral oil". This way, you're just cutting out the middle man. Olive oil is also great skin moisturizer, and excellent at removing spirit gum.

3. Sunblock.
No one likes wrinkles, so pile the sunblock on! I use JASON SPF 46 Kid's Sunblock. Everyday, even in my apartment. Can't be too careful. And if you think pale is out, and tan is in, then there are a wide range of self tanning options. Keep in mind though, here in the West, being tan is a sign of luxury. In most Eastern cultures, pale is the coveted, a sign of the bourgeois. While a tan is noted most common to the farmers and fieldworkers. Most skin creams in the East have bleaching agents in them.

4. Moisturizer.
I've mentioned olive oil, and that is an excellent option. Another great product, and a good choice to support a local company (if you live in the Northwest anyway), is Wild Carrot Herbals Vanilla Bean Butter Cream. I love this stuff. It's affordable. Healthy. And smells DELICIOUS!

5. H2O
Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate! (Even I'm guilty of not doing this enough.)

6. A good dance music Pandora Station/Itunes Playlist.
Throwing on your favorite Guilty-Pleasure playlist (I love my Lady Gaga Pandora Station) and just boogieing around your apartment, is a great way to release endorphins, get some exercise, and take a little time to have some fun during the day. Don't worry, as far as your apartment knows, you ARE Beyonce and are a Fierce Diva. No one is judging.

7. A Good Attitude.
I know this sounds corny. But it's TRUE! Having a positive attitude, and trying to see the bright side of a situation is a massive tool. People want to be around others who are fun, positive, and upbeat. Making little reminders for yourself about staying upbeat and grateful, can really effect you life. Always remember that even on your darkest day, there are others out there who are striving just to survive. There is no benefits to whining and complaining (eventhough we're all human, and are guilty of doing this every once and a while.) Just try to check yourself.

Leslie Buck, the designer of the infamous Greek Coffee cup with the saying, "We Are Happy to Serve You", died last week at 87. He was a WWII refugee from Eastern Europe.

For those of you interested in reading more about the costumes for Lost in Space, hold tight. I have the complete detailed list coming as soon as the run is over (don't want to spoil the fun for those who haven't seen the show yet.)

I am pleased to say that the Von Stratton label created roughly 43 total looks for this production. Which include the interior garments for a performers act.

That ain't bad in a 2 month time frame! I'd like to see how I'd take on Fashion Week if given 6 months. :-D

My friend Wiggy Stardust is the best kind of wacky. First of all, she goes by Wiggy Stardust. Second, judging by this story, she isn't afraid to grab life by it's disco balls.

On Monday night we attended a party hosted by 42Below. There, she told me of a plan her and her friends had, to drive up to Canada the next day and make a fun mini-vacation trip of finding Johnny Weir. He, being the most exciting/controversial thing to happen to ice skating since the Nancy Kerrigan incident.

It seemed so appropriate that the sparkle clad Ice Swan and Wiggy would someday collide in a vision of glitter, but how on Earth do you just "Pop up to Vancouver during the Olympics, and meet a famous competitor".

I don't know how she did it, but she did. And at least she was clad in a dress and onsie from my collection.

Pea Coat for Mom

Today I made my mom this mod style pea-coat for her upcoming trip to Copenhagen. It is made from an old wool coat, which was pretty outdated (Circa early 90's, and kinda frump-a-dump). After I hacked it up, it's little more fashionable with the high collar and yellow satin piping.

My brother is a painter (www.jefrescott.com), so I took one of his works which had been printed on canvas, and sewed it into the lining. Just a little added touch of love.

Leigh Bowery was most noted for his outrageous outfits in London during the mid 80's and early 90's. I first heard of him when I saw the documentary WigStock. Here, this heavy-set obscurely masked drag queen lip lynched through a song, jumping and dancing while at it. Then 3/4th the way through he lays on a table set in the center of the stage...and births out a grown woman in a nude body suit.

I was floored. Who is this? What is this? And WTF?

He was a massive presence. And outrageous personality. An innovative costumer. Grotesque. Bizarre. Outlandish. FABULOUS!

Long Live McQUEEN

When I was 17 I didn't know much about fashion. Sure, I'd been in enough High School musicals to know my way around a costume closet, but most of my greatest fashion moments occurred in the Value Village thrift store by my house. I barely knew how to sew, let alone anything about the billion dollar fashion industry.

One day that all changed. With this album cover:

I'd never seen anything so bizarre and otherworldly, as well as inspiring and beautiful. This singular image sparked an instant love of both the designer Alexander McQueen and the artist Bjork. From then on in, I could not get enough of either. I knew that I may never be able to afford Mcqueen's exquisite creations, but that perhaps I may be inspired by him, and hone my skills as a seamstress to create spectacular visions for myself.

Some of his most brilliant work was for Givenchy Haute Couture in the late 1990's. Unfortunately I am unable to find images of his collections for the House from this time. It was his Cyborg Blade Runner inspired show, with it's TRON-esque bodysuits that blew me away as an aspiring designer.

I remember the season when his models evoked the eerie beauty of ghostly pirates shipwrecked on an island. Models dressed in distressed black frocks hinting of 16th century design, then livening the show with full and fantastical silk dresses in the bright colors of tropical parrots. When I saw this, my jaw dropped, and I knew if ever I married, this would be my Dream Wedding Dress.

Always one to shock and awe, Mcqueen was a true master in the fashion world. Whether you liked what he'd done or not, one thing was for sure; His craftsmanship was impeccable.

There are those out there that believe the fashion world is a ridiculous, silly, and superficial place. Well, yes, sometimes it can be. But we all need clothes. Eventhough the shirt you're wearing might be a $2 purchase from the second-hand store, it was once a carefully thought out plan of a designer. Fashion is the one media accessible to every person in the western world. Anyone can choose a daily ensemble that best represents how they want to portray themselves. That's the joy. Anyone can do it.

As a designer you can be as wild and creative as you want, but ultimately it boils down to "Will Anyone Buy This?". It's tough as a designer to find that line of staying true to your vision, but also needing to create something marketable in order to perpetuate the funding that allows you the means to keep creating. Where is the happy place between the humanity of creating art, and the Capitalism lifeblood of the fashion industry?

From the interviews I've seen, Mcqueen, a down to Earth guy from a working class neighborhood in London, pondered this issue as well. I can only hope that he felt in his heart, that he was staying true to himself.

I would like to think that Lee Mcqueen was the kind of person you could buy a pint, and easily share a laugh with at the pub. His "punk" sensibilities made one feel that eventhough his creations were well out of most peoples price range, that he was still always playing for the underdog. Rooting for society's outcasts, and showcasing unconventional beauty. I hope he knew about all the designers (from aspiring to established) and artists he influenced and inspired through his 20 year career. He made the world a more beautiful place.

One thing is for sure, yours truly owes a debt of gratitude for his influential work. Life might be quite a bit different for me, if Lee McQueen had never existed.

This past NYE was done in style...in the style of the 80's classic Bowie flick; Labyrinth.

Complete with gigantic Maze one had to traverse in order to get to the bar. A talking rock face, absinthe fairies, an Evil Peach Room, Art Installations from the Beta Society, and performances from Seattle and San Fransisco's Drag and Burlesque scene. It was amazing...here's the video Montage:
